Baking soda can cut seconds off speed.
Scientists have proven what athletes have been claiming for years - that Granny’s old cure-all, bicarbonate of soda, can enhance performance.
‘Soda-doping’, as it is known amongst professional sportsmen, can have a significant effect on endurance and speed.
Baking soda appears to work best to enhance speed. A study at Loughborough University found that of nine swimmers who took baking soda before an event, eight reduced their times, the Times reports.
Jonathan Folland, who led the study, said: ‘Essentially, sodium bicarbonate is an alkali substance that increases the pH of the blood.
‘This seems to reduce and offset the acidity produced in the muscles during intense, anaerobic exercise that produces lactic acid most quickly, such as fast running or swimming.’
Sodium bicarbonate, as anyone whose taken it for indigestion knows, reduces acids - helping the body to deal with the acidic waste products produced during exercise, that tire us more quickly.
But the substance isn’t a miracle-worker - shaving seconds, not minutes, off performance time - so that only the most proficient athletes will notice a difference.
The swimmers in the Loughborough study cut 1.5 seconds from their 200m time. Which is hardly significant for most of us who take a leisurely few laps up and down the pool.
A study at the American College of Sports Medicine found that runners could also improve performance with baking soda.
But the substance - used before modern times as a household cleaning agent - can cause upset stomachs, and tastes foul. ‘It is not dangerous, but it tastes appalling,’ warns Dr Folland.
He says that only those who are very serious about sport should try the white powder, which may cause diarrhea.

The government has suggested that more and more people are turning to meditation, herbs, yoga and other forms of alternative medicine because of lack of results with conventional care. One of the largest U.S. studies conducted on alternative medicine found that over one-third of American adults practiced some type of non-conventional medicine in 2002.
The report was based on information from 31,044 interviews with adults aged 18 and older.
Researchers believed the results of the study pointed to the fact that more people are using alternative medicine. Also, it was apparent that an increasing number of people have turned to natural products like herbs or enzymes to help with chronic or recurring pain.
Experts suggested that people should not neglect conventional medicine in those instances where it has been proven to help certain conditions and also recommended consulting a doctor before practicing alternative medicine. Experts were concerned about the number of people turning to alternative medicine because they felt they were no longer able to afford the costs of conventional care.
Experts cautioned people who assumed that just because a product was natural that it was automatically safe to use. An example they cited was the 6.6 percent of people in the study found to use the supplement kava, which has been linked to liver disease.
Significant findings from the study include:
• 62 percent of the participants used some form complementary and alternative medicine over the past year for a specific medical condition, broken down as follows:
# Prayer for own health, 43 percent
# Prayer by others for the respondent’s health, 24 percent
# Natural products (such as herbs, other botanicals, and enzymes), 19 percent
# Deep breathing exercises, 12 percent
# Participation in prayer group for own health, 10 percent
# Meditation, 8 percent
# Chiropractic care, 8 percent
# Yoga, 5 percent
# Massage, 5 percent
# Diet-based therapies, 4 percent
• 45 percent turned to some kind of prayer to help them heal in the past 12 months
• There was a higher tendency for women to use complementary and alternative medicine than men
• 28 percent of the participants felt that conventional treatment would not help them

There are many ways to lose weight. Some of them are deadly, dangerous and stupid.

Human physiology is that meat eating is not in any way natural or healthy for humans. Sure eating meat may not be the worst thing you can do, but its miles from ideal.
What about the bad breath and all of the supplements you have to take on this diet.
Have you ever thought about the fact that there’s no fiber in meat? Will cause some heavy duty constipation compared to eating your natural diet of fresh, ripe and raw fruits and vegetables.
Anyone who’s been eating cooked food for years is much sicker than he or she can imagine. And it takes time for your body to adapt to eating raw fruits and vegetables.

Spreading honey on a diabetic ulcer could prevent the need to amputate an infected foot, researchers say.
A doctor at the University of Wisconsin who helped about half a dozen of her diabetic patients avoid amputation has launched a controlled trial to promote the widespread use of honey therapy.
The therapy involves squeezing a thick layer of honey onto the wound after dead skin and bacteria have been removed.
The honey kills bacteria because it is acidic and avoids the complication of bacterial resistance found with standard antibiotics, Jennifer Eddy, a professor at the University’s School of Medicine and Public Health, told AFP.
“This is a tremendously important issue for world health,” Eddy said.
Diabetics typically have poor circulation and decreased ability to fight infection and ulcers can be hard to treat. An amputation is performed every 30 seconds somewhere in the world, Eddy said.
“If we can prove that honey promotes healing in diabetic ulcers, we can offer new hopes for many patients, not to mention the cost benefit, and the issue of bacterial resistance. The possibilities are tremendous.”
Honey therapy is already used to treat bed sores in New Zealand and as an alternative form of medicine in Europe, but has largely been relegated to history books in the United States.
Eddy first heard of it in medical school when a professor commented that of all the ancient remedies, honey actually seemed to work when he tried it out in the laboratory.
She tried honey therapy as a last resort six years ago with a 79-year-old diabetic patient who had developed foot wounds resistant to standard treatments.
“I tried it only after everything else had failed and… we had essentially sent him home to die,” she said. “All antibiotics were stopped when we started honey, and his wounds rapidly healed.”
Eddy hopes to have the trial completed and the results published by 2008 or 2009.

a. 6.5 cm
b. 4.4 cm
c. 2.4 cm
After the sodium bicarbonate salts treatment only one tumor was left, with a size of only 1.5 cm, which is most likely residual scarring, as shown by the echography of September 10, 2001.
Case three: A 62-year-old patient undergoes surgery in December 1998 for endometrial adenocarcinoma, followed by successive cycles of radiotherapy and anti-hormone therapy. Following the thickening of the peritoneum and the growth of several lymph nodes due to carcinosis; from the clinical point of view, the patient’s condition decayed with the presence of exhaustion, general swelling, intestinal meteorism, irregularity of evacuation, steady feeling of heaviness and blood pressure instability. Treatment with a 5% sodium bicarbonate solution administered alternately thru an endoperitoneal catheter and via IV showed rapid improvement to a normal condition of health. A final CAT scan confirms the regression of the peritoneal carcinosis and a stabilization of the size of the lymph nodes when compared to the preceding year.

More than 1,300 children took part in an online study conducted by leading cognitive research unit, Cognitive Drug Research Ltd, as part of Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2004. The results clearly showed that children who eat breakfast have superior cognitive function and therefore pay more attention and respond more quickly to given tasks. Teachers in Scotland reported that concentration in class improved as a result of introducing breakfast clubs while the children said that it helped them enjoy school more.
But it is not just children that perform less well if they miss breakfast, other studies show that adults who ate breakfast tended to work faster, made fewer mistakes in logic tests and had better memory recall compared with breakfast skippers.
A healthy, balanced breakfast provides vital nutrients
Breakfast provides an important boost to our intake of vitamins, minerals and fiber, and studies show it can be difficult to make up on these nutrients if you miss the opportunity at breakfast. People who eat breakfast are more likely to meet the recommended intake for iron, calcium and B group vitamins than those who skip breakfast.

A study carried out at the University of Cardiff suggests that breakfast eaters are less likely to suffer from colds and ‘flu.
Studies carried out at the University of Bristol examined the breakfast habits of 126 volunteers between the ages of 20 and 79 and assessed their mental health. The results revealed that, even taking into account that fact that breakfast eaters tended to have healthier lifestyles, those who ate breakfast everyday were less depressed less emotionally distressed and had lower perceived levels of stress compared with those who skipped the first meal of the day.

Diabetes can affect the eye in a number of ways. These usually
involve the fine network of blood vessels in the retina - the most
sever condition that can occur is Diabetic Retinopathy.
It involves the retina. This condition is very common in
people who have had diabetes for a long time. The doctor may be
able to see abnormalities in the eyes, but there is no threat to
the sight.
There are two types of diabetic retinopathy which can damage the
sight. Both involve the fine network of blood vessels in the
retina. They are described below.
Type 1 - Maculopathy
This happens when the blood vessels in the retina start to leak. If
the macula is affected, you will find that your central vision
gradually gets worse. You may find it difficult to recognize
people’s faces in the distance or to see details like small print.
The amount of central vision that is lost varies from person to
person. However everyday sight for getting around the house and
outside (navigation vision) will be preserved. It is quite rare for
someone with maculopathy to lose all their sight.
Type 2 - Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Sometimes diabetes can cause the blood vessels in the retina to
become blocked. If this happens then new blood vessels form in the
eye. This is nature’s way of trying to repair the damage so that
the retina has a new blood supply.
Unfortunately these new blood vessels are weak. They are also in
the wrong place - growing on the surface of the retina and into the
vitreous jelly. As a result these blood vessels can bleed very
easily and cause scar tissue to form in the eye. The scarring pulls
and distorts the retina. When the retina is pulled out of position
this is called retinal detachment. This condition is rare than
background retinopathy and is more often found in people who have
been insulin dependent for many years. The new blood vessels will
rarely affect your vision, but their consequences, such as bleeding
or retinal detachment can cause your vision to get worse suddenly.
Your eyesight may become blurred and patchy as the bleeding
obscures part of your vision. Without treatment, total loss of
vision can happen in proliferative retinopathy.

Although your vision may be good, changes can be taking place to
your retina that needs treatment. Most sight loss in diabetes is
preventable.:Early diagnosis is vital. You may have an eye examination every year. Do not wait until your vision has deteriorated to have an eye test.
Your family doctor or optometrist can examine for Diabetic Retinopathy.
Remember, however, that if your vision is getting worse, this does
not necessarily mean you have diabetic retinopathy. It may simply
be a problem that can be corrected by glasses.
