Easing Heartburn

05/22/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Heartburn is a painful, burning sensation, felt in the chest area. In fact, it is acid reflux – stomach acid creeping back up into esophagus. Esophagus does not have a protective lining like stomach therefore the creeping acid hurts and causes heartburn.

How do you feel:

# It could be a feel of burning behind the breastbone
# The heartburn may worsen when you eat, lie down, or bend over
# You may feel that stomach contents are coming back up into your throat
# There could be continued bitter taste in the mouth

Acid Reflux may be triggered by consumption of spicy food, fried food, chocolates, coffee or overeating. Vigorous physical activities after taking meals may also give rise to Acid reflux.

Common remedy for heart burns is Antacid which anybody can get over the counter (OTC). It is fast acting, therefore everybody trusts antacids.

There is still an easier way. Go to your kitchen and pickup a medium sized potato. Take out the juice and add equal amount of water. Drink it on empty stomach – first thing in the morning. Are you surprised? Well potatoes are alkalizing food therefore it will neutralize the effect of the acid in the stomach.

Coke/Sodas from Cans --WASH THEM FIRST

05/19/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

This is Serious! This incident happened recently in North Texas.

A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday.

The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. . This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis.

Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances.. … It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned..

A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i.e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

WAIST SIZE PREDICTS HEART FAILURE

05/12/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

The main reason for people over 65 wind up in the hospital, is heart failure, also known as “congestive heart failure". And the very best predictor of whether or not you’re likely to get heart failure might surprise you.

It’s waist size.

The researchers measured waist size, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ration and BMI (body mass index). All four measures were associated with heart disease, but waist circumference alone predicted heart disease risk regardless of other measures.

Nutritionists and smart doctors have long known that 35″ for women and 40″ for men represent a danger point for insulin resistance (which is the cornerstone of Metabolic Syndrome, also known as pre-diabetes). Metabolic Syndrome significantly increases the risk for heart disease.

If your waist is over 35″ (women) or 40″ (men) it’s time to start doing something. Low-carb diet is one of the most effective ways to combat belly fat and reduce the size of your waist.

You may surely find Blueberries help banish belly fat.

The researchers suggest that blueberries contain high antioxidant content which may somehow alter the way the body stores and processes sugar. It is certainly a great news for those at risk for both heart disease and diabetes.

Blueberries are one of the easiest foods to incorporate into your diet. In season or not, you can always get them frozen. Frozen cherries with yogurt on them, sprinkled with some slivered almonds, flaked unsweetened coconut and some probiotic powder will make it a nightly “dessert". It’s the ultimate “anti-aging” treat!

Try it, you will love it.

Habits of Healthy Skin

05/11/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Make Dr. Amy’s seven habits part of your life. Then, watch every inch of you – but especially your face – start to look younger, less stressed, more alive. Each step chips away at the nonstop pressure and tension that can age you 6 years or more

1. Practice Deep Breathing

Shift your body’s balance of oxygen versus carbon dioxide in favor of energizing, stress-squashing oxygen by doing slow, controlled breathing exercises, twice a day.
When you focus on your breathing, you’re not focusing on anything else. That mental shift helps remove stressors, bringing you to a deeper level of consciousness, a place where you can put things into perspective.

2. Get Active

Release the repressed anxiety trapped inside you by putting your body in motion for 30 minutes or more.
Do something – anything – every day, because exercise only tames stress for a maximum of 24 hours. So to reap the most benefits, you need to do it daily. If you prefer, tuck 10-minute pockets of activity into your day – at lunch, after dinner, right after you get up and the house is still quiet. .
Staying active boosts blood circulation, which delivers more nutrients to cells and skin. It also increases lung capacity, so you can take in more oxygen; lifts your spirits and sense of well-being; and fights age-related diseases. Plus, for many, it’s the ultimate stress reducer.

3. Beat the Foods That Beat You

Reduce the allure of sugary, fatty foods – which are as bad for your skin as they are for the rest of you – by eating more lean protein: fish, eggs, poultry, low-fat dairy foods, and even walnuts. Also, try to be more aware of what you reach for – and how much you consume – when you’re stressed.
Protein is key to avoiding mood swings and energy dips. It helps you maintain a healthy blood sugar balance, which in turn keeps certain hormones (including insulin) in check. Bumping up your protein intake also gives you more energy and fights hunger pangs, which can play games with your moods.Morning protein helps curb afternoon cravings

4. Focus on the Good Things

Pick up a notebook you particularly like, and at the end of each day, make a list of things for which you are truly grateful. Or write down three things that went well, and why.
Keeping a journal that records the good things in life helps shift your focus to what you’re doing right, and that can put a brake on the stressful, negative chatter that often goes on in your head.

5. Stretch Out Your Sleep

Make it a goal to sleep as many hours as you need to feel alive and productive the next day – all day.
Sleep is free cosmetic medicine, pure and simple. When you ask Dr. Amy what single thing makes the biggest improvement in how a stressed-out person looks, she says, “Sleep.” Nothing exacerbates stress and etches in lines like exhaustion.

6. Take a Time-Out

For most of us, life is so hyper-scheduled and speedy that we never do absolutely nothing. It’s rare to set aside time to simply be – no agenda, no demands, no plan. (Just like a real vacation) Find a comfortable, quiet spot to sit for 10 to 15 minutes every day, stop all your hustling and bustling . . . and simply, by yourself, be still.
Slowing down for a little while helps create a sense of spaciousness in your life, a break in the nonstop whirl that can open the door to new perceptions, new solutions, new possibilities. It gives your brain, your psyche, your whole being a break. Like one long, peaceful sigh.

7. Cuddle or Have Sex

Enjoy a little intimacy, at least once a week.
All kinds of age-defying, beauty-promoting events happen during sex as three seductive hormones spill out of the brain: endorphin, a natural opiate, which contributes to that delicious high; prolactin, which gives you that relaxing, tension-zapping “ahhhhhhh"; and soothing oxytocin, which promotes feelings of affection and triggers a nurturing instinct.

Get slimmer by chewing gums

05/11/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Next time you grab a handful of nuts to snack on, count to 40.

A recent study revealed that when people ate a small serving of almonds, 40 chews quelled hunger better than 10 or even 25 crunches of the same amount of nuts.

Not only did the extra chews help curb hunger best, but also the feelings of fullness lasted longest when people gave the nuts the extra chews. And the practice may work with other foods, too, because researchers suspect it may simply be the mere act of chewing that switches on your brain’s satiety center.

You could crush that 3 p.m. cookie craving just by chewing a little of this: gum.

That’s right. A study found that chewing gum can really put the kibosh on your afternoon appetite in a big way.

People who chew either sweetened or sugar-free gum after lunch feel full longer, have fewer hunger pangs, have fewer cravings for sweets, and eat fewer afternoon snacks – compared with people who don’t chew gum.

We welcome your comments since we wish to see you – slimmer.

Missing Regular breakfast invites Diabetes

05/06/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Diabetes is a dangerous health problem. In adults, diabetes is often a result of long-term nutritional neglect and abuse.

Are you regular with your breakfast? In the morning when we get up we are hungry. Our fuel supply is very low. We surely need a good breakfast. It could be porridge or buttered bread slices/toasts with a glass of milk or a bowl of curd. But usually it is avoided and later in the morning, a high-calorie muffin or a candy bar is preferred. We must realize that the snack disturbs the insulin balance. It results into increased insulin into the bloodstream.

This pattern is repeated throughout the day. A graph of the average person’s blood sugar levels would show sharp spikes - both highs and lows - in every 24-hour period. Eventually, the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas wear out. The result is consistently high levels of blood glucose which is called diabetes.

Beside obesity and heart disease, Diabetes may cause severe Eye problems, kidney problems, and circulatory problems.

An obvious preventive strategy would be to ensure that blood glucose levels are steady throughout the day. Actually, this is easy to do. All that’s required is to develop healthy eating habits and do regular exercise.

Eat breakfast - a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese mixed with a 6-ounce cup of yogurt is all you need
Do food combining at every meal - always eat a combination of protein and carbohydrate

No between-meal snacks

Regular exercise that is challenging and fun - build-up gradually and be consistent

Celery flavonoid may cut ovarian cancer risk

05/05/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Increased intake of the flavonoid apigenin, found in celery, parsley, and tomato sauce, may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by 20 per cent, suggests a new study from Harvard.

“Although none of the individual foods contributing to apigenin intake in this study population were significantly associated with ovarian cancer risk, there was a suggestion of an inverse association with increasing consumption of cauliflower, raisins, tomato sauce, and several other flavonoid-rich foods,” wrote lead author Margaret Gates.
Of all the cancers of the female reproductive system, ovarian cancer has the highest mortality.

In the UK, ovarian cancer causes more than 4,000 deaths per year, according to Cancer Research UK. While in 2003 in the US, a total of 14,657 women died from ovarian cancer, said the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA).

The study was funded by the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Vitamin E may reverse male pattern baldness:

05/05/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

Daily supplements of a patented tocotrienol (vitamin E) complex may increase hair growth in people with male pattern baldness by 42 per cent, suggests a new study from Carotech.

According to the American Medical Association, about 95 per cent of all cases of hair loss are due to male pattern baldness, a condition that affects about 40 million American men.

The balding is reported to start by the age of 30 in 25 per cent of men, and in two-thirds by the age of 60. According to the AMA, there is a 4 in 7 chance of inheriting the baldness gene.

The eight-month study included 28 volunteers aged between 18 and 59 with a hair loss problem for approximately two to five years. During the course of the study, instructions were given to not alter their hairstyle, hair care products (shampoo, conditioners, etc) or dye their hair.

Volunteers were randomly assigned to the palm tocotrienol complex (total tocotrienol intake of 100 mg) or the placebo (soft gelatin capsule containing 600 mg soy bean oil).

Hair counts, measured by the counting the number of hairs in a pre-selected 2x2 cm area, were found to significantly increase by an average of 41.8 per cent in the tocotrienol group, with eight volunteers experiencing greater than 50 per cent hair growth. In the placebo group, however, no statistically significant differences in the number of hairs were detected before or after the study period, and only one volunteer showed more than 20 per cent increase in hair count.

Arthritis - Treat with raisins

05/01/09 | by Ajit | Categories: Diseases

I came across a letter which reads as:
My 79 year old mom, who lives with me, suffered from a degenerative spine and knees. She read an article about the raisins several months ago, and we decided to give it a try. Prior to that, the routine was: out of bed, to a recliner with cold packs behind the back, Darvocet, then blood pressure meds and vitamins. After about 30-45 minutes, she could get up and walk around, with limited range and motion.
Two weeks of eating the gin-soaked raisins, she doesn’t need the cold pack and has even started a small garden. And, as a bonus, since the pain is all but gone, her blood pressure meds have been cut in half!

Procedure to prepare raisins:
Pour the gin over just till it covers the raisins. Yes, the golden raisins are the ones to use (for the person in Australia, maybe you can order them online). Leave the open bowl out on the counter until the raisins are plump with gin and the rest has evaporated. If there’s a little left in the bowl, just drink it. Put the raisins in a jar with a lid, not necessary to refrigerate them, but it won’t hurt them if you do. The alcohol is a natural preservative.
Dosage: Take 9 (nine) raisins each day, in the morning.
