Scientists from the University of Exeter’s School of Sport and Health Sciences have discovered that beetroot juice boosts stamina by making muscles more fuel-efficient.
In 2009, the same researchers found that the juice can increase physical endurance. The study focused on men aged 19 to 38 cycling on exercise bikes. Drinking 500ml of beetroot juice a day for a week enabled them to cycle 16 per cent longer before getting tired out.
Now, the scientists say they’ve understood how the beetroot boost works.
The new study showed that beetroot juice doubled the amount of nitrate in the blood of volunteers, and reduced the rate at which muscles used their main source of energy. Beetroot juice helped muscles work more efficiently and lowered their oxygen uptake.
The researchers believe nitrate from beetroot juice leads to increased levels of nitric oxide in the body, which affects a range of functions including blood flow, hormone levels and cell signalling.
“We have seen growing interest in the benefits of drinking beetroot juice in the world of professional sport and I expect this study to attract even more attention from athletes,” the Independent quoted the study’s leader, Professor Andy Jones, as saying.

For the secret to a golden, healthy complexion doesn’t lie in sunbeds, sprays or sunbathing - but in eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg.
It takes just one month for the benefits of a five-a-day diet to enhance the colour of pale skin, scientists say.
The researchers also found that people preferred the healthy colour of skin created by eating lots of fruit and veg to the suntanned look.
‘We have produced evidence that dietary intake of fruit and vegetables affects skin colour,’ said Ian Stephen, of Bristol University, who led the research team. ‘We found people always preferred the golden effect from diet to the darker effect from the sun.’
He believes carotenoids - a class of around 600 different types of pigment found in plants - are the secret ingredients that gives an attractive glow.
For the study, volunteers were put on a diet of five fruit and vegetables every day for at least a month. Photos of them before and after were shown to strangers and rated for attractiveness. The ‘after’ faces were consistently ranked higher.
The scientists - who include psychologist Professor David Perrett of St Andrews University - say the findings could be used to back up the Government’s healthy eating campaign.
Telling people that their diet could give them a more attractive skin may be more effective than stressing the adverse impact of a poor diet on health.
‘Most people don’t know the effect of diet on skin tone,’ said Professor Perrett. ‘We were very surprised by these results ourselves.’

As a non-surgeon practicing at the busiest orthopedic surgery hospital in the country, Dr. Vijay Vad stands out. Instead of sending his patients to surgery, his goal is to keep them out of it. A sports medicine specialist at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery who regularly works with professional golfers and tennis players, Dr. Vad is a believer in the power of the mind-body connection and regularly prescribes yoga exercises and other alternative strategies for his patients. He is also the author of the new book “Stop Pain: Inflammation Relief for an Active Life,’’ which is packed with practical advice and self-care options to help chronic pain patients reduce their dependence on narcotics and avoid additional medical procedures.
I spoke with Dr. Vad recently about his new book and the problem of chronic pain. Here’s our conversation.
Q. Why did you think there needed to be a book about pain?
A. I have seen a big explosion in chronic back pain and arthritis, and what I realized is that people have very limited self-help options. In the medical system, unfortunately, many health care providers do what they are trained to do. They push you into prescription medications which have side effects or suggest tons of medical procedures. Medical procedures like joint replacements and lumbar fusions have skyrocketed. I felt there was a need for people whose main focus is self help, giving them clinically proven options that will really help them improve their quality of life and minimize their dependence on narcotics and medical procedures as soon as possible.
Q. What else can someone do to relieve pain besides take a prescription pain reliever or undergo a procedure?
A. There are so many self-help things you can do. Something as simple as trying to do 30 minutes of aerobic exercise can help. With pain, you’re in a vicious cycle – you take more narcotics, your REM sleep decreases, and then you’re tired and you don’t want to exercise. If you can get through the first week or two of extra pain by doing the proper exercise, like 30 minutes of walking daily, long term that’s going to have an impact. Most people give up on simple walking, but it can have a huge impact long term.
Q. For people treating pain with exercise, do you have to be willing to get worse in order to get rid of pain eventually?
A. In the case of exercises, that’s true. If the pain goes up four-fold, you’re doing something wrong, but proper exercise will make you a little worse for a while before it makes you better. It’s a pain desensitization period. Think about if you have raw skin on your knuckle and you tap it. At first it hurts, but if you tap it more and more it will get desensitized. You’re doing the same to your chronic pain structure when you exercise. There is so much data on this with rehabilitation for back pain, for instance. You become pain desensitized by proper exercise with gradual increases in stress. The overall consensus for exercise therapy is that it has a positive impact. It can be something simple — it doesn’t have to be fancy machines or stretches.
Q. Are other types of pain helped by exercise?
A. We see the same thing with arthritis. A gradual increase in load on an arthritic knee joint not only reduces pain, but there are data to show proper exercise therapy can slow down the loss of cartilage. Muscles are the shock absorbers, but they’re shut down by arthritic pain. You can reactivate those muscles gradually with proper exercise therapy.
Q. Are there other self-help measures besides exercise?
A. That’s only one part of self help. There are topical treatments and supplements as well. When I started exploring this I used to think the topical thing is bogus. But there is a whole science behind topical pain relievers.
Q. Are there food and diet options for treating chronic pain?
A. The whole book really establishes the link between inflammation and pain, and an anti-inflammatory diet is very important. The book talks about the fundamentals of diet, proper exercise and topicals and proper supplements that you may use to try to control your pain. I look at supplements with known data for certain problems, like glucosamine and chondroitin and vitamin D.
Q. Do any of these treatments work for pain disorders like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome?
A. I talk in my book about fibromyalgia. I have my own personal biases. Yes, it definitely exists, but I do think it’s over-diagnosed. I give an example of a woman who had been suffering from fibromyalgia for six or seven years. She couldn’t sleep, she was exhausted. I examined her and she didn’t have the classic fibromyalgia points. We talked, and she really had an irritated nerve in her neck that was causing pain in her shoulder blade. Literally, after one epidural and one proper pillow, she was night and day a different woman. But the book also talks about people who truly have fibromyalgia and other problems, and about the importance of aerobic exercise and how that can affect endorphin levels and how exercise increases REM sleep.
Q. When should you use self help versus alternative treatment like acupuncture versus seeing a medical doctor?
A. If people have gone to a chiropractor or acupuncturist for back pain for six months with no relief, to me there are lots of red flags that there is something else going on. If you try things for a month or two and things haven’t improved, you really need to see a doctor. That doctor visit can rule out something very serious.
Q. What are you hoping people get out of this book?
A. Whether you have a medical procedure or not, there are so many things you can do that are available right now. Every little thing adds up. Look at your mattress. Maybe the chair at work isn’t right. Maybe your computer setup isn’t perfect and is causing you neck pain.
What we’re trying to do here is add up six things you can do properly on your own, and it might have a huge impact on your quality of life. I’m trying to get people off using narcotics every time. Narcotics are a downward spiral. It’s a deal with the devil. I don’t know if you’ve seen anybody on heavy duty chronic pain medication, but it really affects how they live their life. And even with anti-inflammatory drugs, there are health issues. I’m trying to give people options that really don’t have a lot of downside.

Carcinoma of the uterine cervix is the commonest cancer amongst Indian women. Out of 10 women dying of cervical cancer every hour in South Asia, 8 of them are in India. Cervix cancer occupies the top rank among cancers in women in most developing countries, constituting 34% of all women’s cancers. On a global scale, India carries onefifth of the world burden: the estimated annual global incidence is 500,000, India contributes 100,000. The magnitude of the problem is thus more than evident. Here’s all you need to know to protect yourself.
What is cervical cancer?
No, it has nothing to do with your neck or your spinal column. Cervical cancer is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the tissues of the cervix. The cervix, the lower part of the uterus, connects the body of the uterus to the vagina. The normal cervix is a healthy pink in colour. It is covered with scale-like cells called squamous cells. The cervical canal is lined with another kind of cell called columnar cells. The area where the two cells meet-the squamocolumnar junction and transformation zone (Tzone)- is the likeliest spot for abnormal cell growth. The T-zone is more exposed in the case of young women (teens and those in their 20s), making them more susceptible to cervical infections.
How do one find out if they have it?
In its earliest stages, cervical cancer is difficult to detect because there are no obvious symptoms. Irregular bleeding, bleeding or pain during sex, or vaginal discharge, chronic low backache -symptoms associated with cervical cancer-appear when the disease is in an advanced stage. If you have any of these symptoms, do not ignore it. See a doctor immediately to rule out cancer.
Irregular bleeding, bleeding or pain during sex, vaginal discharge are some signs but don’t necessarily mean you have cancer. Consult your doctor. He might ask you to go in for a Pap test.
What exactly is a Pap Test?
It’s a simple procedure: A speculum (the standard device used to examine the cervix) is placed in the vagina. Cells are skimmed from the surface of the cervix with a cotton swab then smeared onto a glass slide. Another sample is taken from the T-zone (transformation-zone), with a tiny wooden or plastic spatula, or a tinbrush. Newer techniques called ‘liquid-based’ Pap tests provide for greater accuracy and reliability.
The slide is sent to a lab where a cytotechnologist (a lab professional who reviews the slides) and a pathologist examine the sample for any abnormalities. Performed properly, the Pap test is fairly accurate and is able to detect a significant majority of cervical cancers-even in the early stages.
How can one ensure its accuracy?
To help improve the reliability of your Pap test, schedule your appointment two weeks after your last menstrual period and avoid the following for at least 48 hours before the test:
• Having sex
• Using tampons
• Using vaginal creams, suppositories, medicines, sprays or powders
What if the report shows a problem?
An abnormal Pap smear result does not mean you have cervical cancer. It indicates some degree of cellular change in the cells that cover the surface (lining or epithelium) of the cervix.
A Pap test is a screening tool; other procedures are necessary to confirm Pap test abnormalities and diagnose the condition. All abnormal Pap test reports should have some form of follow-up. This may include a ‘watch-and-wait’ approach with retesting after some months. Depending on the degree of abnormality, your doctor may recommend other tests, including colposcopy (a magnified view of the vagina and cervix) biopsy or curettage.
How often should I get the Pap Test done?
• Screening should begin about three years after a woman begins having intercourse, but no later than age 21.
• Women should have a regular Pap test every year or a liquid-based Pap test every two or three years. After age 30, women who have had three normal test results in a row may be screened every two to three years.
• The combination of HPV testing with a Pap test should be considered as an alternative for routine screening in women 30 and older.
Is it treatable?
Yes, it is treatable, even curable in its early stages. The best treatment plans take into account the location of abnormal cells, the results of colposcopy and the age of the patient. The treatment basically involves destroying or removing the abnormal cells. Three basic approaches are used alone or in various combinations:
Radiation therapy (use of high-dose X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells) is used to treat both early and advanced-stage cancer. In most stages of cervical cancer, radiation is used with chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy is the use of chemical drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment because the drugs enter the bloodstream, travel through the body and kill cancer cells outside the cervix. Chemotherapy with platinum can also make radiation more effective, depending on the stage of the cancer.
Surgery is used to remove the cancer-affected area.
What’s the best way to protect myself?
Detecting pre-cancerous changes in their earliest stages through regular Pap tests is the best way to prevent cervical cancer. Most women who develop invasive cervical cancer have not had regular Pap tests. Reducing or eliminating risk factors is the best protection. And for God’s sake go for the vaccine. It’s now available in India.
The Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine for HPV in the summer of 2006. Gardasil is approved for women ages 13 to 26 to prevent infection with HPV. Years of clinical trials found the vaccine is safe and 100% effective in preventing HPV strains 16 and 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancers. Gardasil, given in three injections over six months, is also 99% effective in preventing HPV strains 6 and 11, which cause about 90% of genital wart cases.
Although Gardasil prevents the bulk of HPV strains, it doesn’t protect against all of them so the FDA recommends it as a complement to safe sex practices and regular Pap tests. Also keep in mind that the vaccine will not get rid of an existing HPV infection.

A 79-year-old retired college professor, slipped on the rain-slicked marble tile in China on July 21. His head hit the ground, but he got up and seemed OK, so they boarded a tour bus heading into the mountains. Shortly, he started vomiting and complaining of sinus-like pain. Lynda Bruner’s medical emergency last summer almost ended the same way. The sales executive from Bel-Air, Md., fell ill with what she thought was heat exhaustion on the last day of a Dominican Republic vacation with friends to celebrate milestone birthdays, including her 60th.
Soon she developed breathing problems and went into cardiac arrest. Doctors revived her, but she remained in a coma for three days. Bruner awoke at a hospital in Florida, where she had arrived via a medical flight arranged by Medex, the same company that handled Retired Professor’s flights. The company arranged for Bruner’s flight with a nurse to Maryland and helped her husband, who doesn’t speak Spanish, deal with Dominican doctors.
The expenses totalled more than $15,000, but were covered by health insurance her employer provides — a benefit she didn’t know about in advance. Bruner had also bought extra travellers’ insurance.
U.S. doctors found and removed a tongue cyst they thought might have contributed to the breathing problems, and Bruner is doing fine.
With such varied experiences, everybody says they will not travel out without traveller’s health insurance. Even if you never need it, that sense of security, is worth it.

Scientific studies from Japan, China, Denmark and the United States show that calcium carbonate from oyster shell and mother of pearl are effective in preventing and repairing bone loss. One study published by the Calcium Research Institute of Osaka, Japan (April, 1958) was a randomized, double-blind test carried out to compare the effects of oyster shell seaweed calcium (AAA Ca) and calcium carbonate versus a placebo in 58 elderly, hospitalized women. Lumbar spine and radial bone mineral density were measured at three-month intervals. The results were that oyster shell calcium appears to be effective for increasing bone mineral density in elderly subjects.
According to one study published in the December, 1988 issue of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, titled “The Anti-aging Effect of Pearl Oyster Shell Powder,” a combination of powdered sea pearl, mother of-pearl and freshwater pearl has been shown to have tonic and anti-aging actions. Based on Chinese pharmacological studies, the positive effects of the sea pearl and mother-of-pearl powder is higher than that of freshwater pearl powder.
