“ A couple of Bowen treatments, water / chemical distribution operating as intended, structural integrity restored. Pain gone. New child. And given that homeostasis may be established, won’t chemical imbalances initiating abnormal behavior be corrected? Research connected with brain damaged babies indicates that the immature brain is capable of transferring vital functions away from the damaged area, reconnecting neural pathways. When there is structural imbalance, the body’s nerve pathways and fluid distribution network must be impaired. Correcting that imbalance encourages homeostasis. A body able to operate to the best of its ability.” - Col Murray, In Search of Tom Bowen and the Therapy He Inspired…and Lots of Other Stuff
ISBT-Bowen Therapy is helping many children in some Hong Kong public schools, and continues to receive positive feedback by their happy parents and teachers.
Those with foot, big toe pain and bunions
ISBT-Bowen Therapy helps to release foot pain, bunions, pain in the big toe or hallux, by releasing tension and pain on the toe joint, reducing inflammation around the joint as well as increasing the range of motion of the restricted toe movements.
In addition to regular ISBT-Bowen treatments, the following is recommended to be performed every evening for 3-5 weeks, to help reduction of Bunion discomfort / size.
1. 20-minute Epsom Salts foot bath (2 tablespoons of Epsom Salts in 1 litre of hot water) every evening. This helps to break down the calcification of the bunion.
2. After each evening foot bath, the patient would then apply “Bunion Cream". This helps reduce some inflammation or bruising around the joint.

Although the Bowen Technique is relatively new to the UK, a recent study on the evaluation of the Bowen Technique in the treatment of Frozen Shoulder (1) undertaken by Dr Bernie Carter, principal lecturer in Children’s Nursing at the University of Central Lancashire found:
# ‘A high level of satisfaction with the therapy, a commitment to using Bowen in the future should they require it for another episode of frozen shoulder or other condition, and the intention to recommend the therapy and therapist to friends and family’
# ‘A significant improvement in shoulder mobility and associated function for all participants, with 70% of participants regaining full mobility (equal to the non-affected side) by the end of the treatment.’
# ‘Markedly reduced pain intensity scores and pain quality descriptors for all participants, although some participants recorded scores of 1-3 that they described as a slight ache to a mild pain. Participants at the end of the study no longer used the intense and invasive pain descriptors.’
The Bowen Technique cannot, from this study, claim to be 100% successful but it demonstrated a significant improvement for participants, even those with a very longstanding history of frozen shoulder. For the majority of participants it provided a good outcome particularly in relation to improved mobility.
All participants experienced improvement in their daily activities. None of the participants reported that their pain was having a severe impact on their daily activities, and there was a decrease in the reports of mild and moderate impact by the end of the treatment.
For the majority of participants (even those with a longstanding problem) it provided a good outcome particularly in relation to improved mobility. In terms of the outcome measures used in other studies – success rate, mobility, pain and functional status – Bowen can be seen to be a positive intervention and certainly one which participants in the study evaluated as being highly satisfactory.

Clean water and fresh squeezed lemon is one of the most well tested energy boosters around. Most people in America rely on caffeinated beverages like coffee to get aroused in the morning. These adrenal stimulants produce dirty energy in the form of blood sugar swings and oxidative stress. Water with lemon produces clean energy by hydrating and oxygenating the body to extraordinary energy and mental clarity.
After sleeping through the night the bodily tissues are dehydrated and need clean, pure water to filter out toxins and improve energy production in the cells. Most individuals turn to stimulants like coffee in the morning to give them a jump start. Unfortunately, coffee is a diuretic that depletes your body of water reserves and essential minerals and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium & magnesium.
People feel energized by coffee due to the effects of caffeine on the adrenal glands. Coffee stimulates these organs to pump out instant energy hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine. These hormones stimulate the body to breakdown stored sugar and release it into the bloodstream. This process causes abnormal blood sugar that increases oxidative stress, free radical formation and overall tissue damage.
This is called dirty energy because it produces a rampant amount of damage to the body in order to activate energy formation. Clean energy produces cellular energy without an excessive load of oxidative stress.
Food as Bioelectrical Energy
The food and beverages we eat provide electrically charged molecules that initiate energy production in our body. An ion is part of a molecule that carries an electrical charge. Positively charged ions are called “cations,” while negatively charged ions are called “anions.”
Most of the food we put into our bodies comes in a cationic form, while our natural digestive processes (hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes, saliva) are anionic. Lemon is one of the only anionic foods on the planet. This means that it carries a very strong negative charge and is extremely electrically active.
Fresh lemon helps oxygenate the body and maximizes enzyme function. Lemon is known to stimulate the liver’s natural enzymes. This assists the liver in the process of dumping toxins like uric acid and of liquefying congested bile ducts.
Citric Acid Cleanses the System
Citric acid can also play a very important role in chelating out abnormal calcium stones. It has a unique ability to form soluble complexes with calcium that many have used to eliminate pancreatic stones and kidney stones. This mechanism can also help prevent calcium deposits from building up in the arteries that promote cardiovascular disease.
Clean water with lemon provides the body with hydration, anti-oxidants and electrolytes. Lemon is a rich source of the immune boosting vitamin C. It also has good quantities of electrolytes such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Lemon is a tremendous source of citrus bioflavonoid anti-oxidant phytonutrients that have been given the label Vitamin P.
Vitamin P consists of the flavonoid glycosides hesperetin and naringenin among others. Studies have shown that vitamin P enhances the anti-oxidant capability of vitamin C. These bioflavonoids also improve capillary permeability and overall blood flow. This is especially important for oxygenating tissues and maintaining normal blood pressure. These anti-oxidants have also been shown to reduce swelling, venous backup and edema.
Upon rising take 1 full lemon and squeeze it into 16-32 oz of fresh clean water and drink. Be sure to eat out the membranous parts of the lemon where the majority of the pectin fiber and citrus bioflavonoids are located. Stevia can be added to form sugar-free lemonade. Apple cider vinegar and various herbs can be used to boost enzymatic and anti-oxidant potential.

It can sometimes be hard to distinguish facts from old wives’ tales when it comes to health information, particularly as some of the biggest fallacies are so widespread. To help you separate fact from fiction, check out the truth behind 10 of the most common health myths.
Eating late at night makes you fat
Many of us are familiar with the claim that eating late at night will cause you to gain weight. However, not only is there little research to back up this claim, but separate studies by Dunn Nutrition Centre and Oregon Health & Science University have suggested that it is little more than a myth. While missing meals throughout the day can cause you to binge of an evening, it is not the time you eat that matters so much as the quantity. The fact is, as long as you burn off the amount of calories that you eat during each day, it is irrelevant what time you eat them.
Reading in dim light damages your eyesight
Good news for all those who remember reading under covers using a torch as a child, according to researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, while it may cause temporary dryness and eye strain, reading in dim light does not permanently damage your eyes. Likewise, the common belief that sitting too close to the TV set will ruin your eyesight is yet another old wives’ tale (just for the record, it also won’t make them square!).
You can ‘catch up’ on missed sleep at the weekend
Lack of sleep has been linked to a whole host of health problems, including weight gain and heart disease. However, many of us believe that it is OK to sacrifice sleep during the week so long as we have a ‘catch up’ sleep at the weekend. Sadly, this may not be the case. In a study led by a sleep expert at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, participants were restricted to just four hours’ sleep for five nights and then given a “recovery” sleep of 10 hours. Even after this sleep their reaction times, attention span and levels of fatigue failed to return to normal, showing that a single weekend lie-in may not be sufficient to make up for the effects of lack of sleep during the week.
Cold weather increases your risk of catching a cold
With more of us catching colds in the winter months, many of us believe that this is due to the weather. However, the experts remain dubious. In a study by the Common Cold Research Unit a group of volunteers were inoculated with a cold virus and then split into two groups; half kept in a warm room while the others stood wet in a hallway after taking a bath. Results surprisingly showed no difference in the number of people who caught colds within the two groups. Rather than being due to the cold weather, it is thought that the cold virus spreads more easily during the winter months as more people are driven indoors where they come into close contact with others.
Vitamin C prevents colds
Another cold related myth; it is a widespread belief that taking a daily supplement of vitamin C will protect you from catching a common cold. However, while those exposed to periods of high stress (such as marathon runners) can indeed reduce their risk of catching the cold virus through daily supplementation, a review of 30 studies published in the Cochrane Library has suggested that, for the average person, taking a daily dose of vitamin C does little to reduce the severity or length of a cold.
Thin is better than fat
With the growing obesity problem in modern society and all its publicized health implications, many of us understandably hold the belief that being fat is the worst possible thing for our health. However, while it is true that being overweight can be damaging to our health, being underweight is just as bad for us if not worse. In fact, a study by researchers at Tohoku University found that those who are overweight at 40 are likely to live longer than those who are thin, with underweight people being at greater risk of heart disease and pneumonia.
All bacteria are harmful
We seem to be increasingly aiming for an environment that is perfectly sterile. However, while we tend to think of bacteria as germs responsible for illness, healthy skin is actually covered in around 1000 different species of “good bacteria” which can actually help prevent disease. Likewise, the human gut contains a multitude of good bacteria which help to keep us healthy. While good hygiene is of course important, so is protecting our good bacteria by avoiding overuse of antibiotics or over-cleansing the skin.
We should all drink eight glasses of water a day
We are all familiar with the ubiquitous advice to drink eight glasses of water a day. However, more recent research has suggested that there is actually no scientific evidence supporting this recommendation, and that drinking excessive amounts of water can actually be dangerous. While we all need to stay hydrated throughout the day, a proportion of our required fluid intake is generally met through the food we eat. Furthermore, our fluid recommendations will vary depending on the temperature and how active we are, amongst other factors.
Breastfeeding makes your boobs sag
While many new mums are inundated with claims over the health benefits of breastfeeding, some are put off by the worry over what it will do to their breasts. However, here’s some research to put your minds at rest, ladies: a study led by author and plastic surgeon Brian Rinker has shown that, contrary to what many believe, breastfeeding does not cause breasts to sag. After evaluating patients’ medical history, the research found no difference in saging breast between women who breastfed and those who hadn’t. In fact, it is the pregnancy itself that contributes to the changes that women see in their breasts, alongside smoking and age.
As long as you exercise you can eat whatever you want
Many people believe that only overweight, inactive people need to watch what they eat. However, this is a massive untruth. Not only do many people overindulge following exercise, causing them to cling on to those extra pounds, but even for those who don’t gain weight easily plying your body with junk food can still cause damage to your health. While staying active can lower your risk of conditions such as heart disease, to help stay in optimum health it is still advisable to eat well and make sure you don’t miss out on vital nutrients essential for good health.

The common cold is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system. While it gives you ailments like cough, sore throat, runny nose, and fever, it can also lead to breathing problems as there are good chances of the nasal passage getting congested.
We can understand what a horrible experience it is to have a stuffed nose and keep gasping for breath every other minute. You can easily pick up cold by inhaling somebody else’s germs or touching someone who has a virus and then touching your eyes and nose, thereby allowing the germs to enter your body. Once the virus has invaded, it opens its account in your throat and starts producing baby viruses by hundreds. These viruses then traverse all around your body and trigger those hateful symptoms like: a stuffy/drippy nose, sore throat, aches, breathing problems and cough.
These are some of the detestable symptoms of cold:
Runny nose
Cough
Nasal congestion
Sore or itchy throat
Sneezing
Watery eyes
Mild headache
Mild fatigue or body aches
Fever less than 102 degrees
It is said that time is the sure-shot cure for cold. It is a viral infection and may last for 7 to 10 days. There are medications available to treat cold but they do no magic. The medicines curb the symptoms and may help you recover quickly. For prevention and treatment of cold, natural remedies should be preferred over pharma drugs as the latter have been found to create several adverse effects in the body.
Let’s take a look at some of the natural remedies for cold:
Using Lemon
Vitamin C-rich lemon juice is known to amplify body resistance, decrease toxicity and reduce the duration of illness. Take a lemon and squeeze it into a glass of water. Add a teaspoon of honey. This should be taken once or twice daily.
Using Garlic
Garlic soup is time-tested remedy to battle cold. The soup can be easily prepared by boiling three or four cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water. In soup form, it flushes out all toxins from the system and thus helps bring down fever. This soup should be taken once a day.
The oil which resides inside garlic helps open the clogged respiratory passages. Five spoons of garlic oil should be mixed with a teaspoon of onion juice and then diluted in a cup of water. The resulting mixture can be taken two or three times a day.
Using Turmeric
Apart from cold, Ginger also works wonders for throat irritations. Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed in 30 ml of warm milk can be taken 1-2 times daily. Turmeric powder should be put into a hot ladle (the spoon used for pouring soup). Milk should then be poured in it and boiled over a slow fire. In case you have a running nose, smoke from burning turmeric can provide quick relief.
Using Bitter Gourd
Many would be sulking as they read this but bitter gourd is not as bitter when it comes to treatment of cold. You would need the roots of bitter gourd to prepare this remedy. A teaspoon of root paste, mixed with an equal quantity of honey or holy basil leaf juice can be taken once every night. This will help you get rid of the cold soon and will keep the symptoms at bay.
Using Honey
Honey is a popular home remedy for cold and cough in many cultures. It is believed that honey works by soothing and coating an irritated throat; not to forget its antioxidant-ial and antibacterial effects.
A modern epidemic, a deadly disease that one of every two of you have, a disease that’s making you fat, sick and will kill you, but 90 percent of you don’t even know you have it.
This disease is diabesity, the continuum of abnormal biology that ranges from mild insulin resistance to full-blown diabetes.
I want to explain the real causes of diabesity and provide eight steps you can take to reverse this disease starting today.
The Real Causes of Diabesity
The entire spectrum of diabesity including all of its complications – diabetes, elevated blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol – are simply downstream symptoms that result from problems with diet, lifestyle, and environmental toxins interacting with our unique genetic susceptibilities.
Those are the real causes of diabesity.
And the reason these dietary and lifestyle factors lead to diabesity is because they create a condition known as insulin resistance. Contrary to what most people think, Type 2 diabetes is a disease of too much, not too little, insulin. Insulin is the real driver of problems with diabesity.
When your diet is full of empty calories and an abundance of quickly-absorbed sugars, liquid calories and carbohydrates (like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes), your cells slowly become resistant to the effects of insulin and need more and more to do the same job of keeping your blood sugar even. Thus you develop insulin resistance. A high insulin level is the first sign of a problem. The higher your insulin levels are, the worse your insulin resistance. Your body starts to age and deteriorate. In fact, insulin resistance is the single most important phenomenon that leads to rapid and premature aging and all its resultant diseases, including heart disease, stroke, dementia and cancer.
As your insulin levels increase it leads to an appetite that is out of control, increasing weight gain around the belly, more inflammation and oxidative stress, and myriad downstream effects including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low HDL, high triglycerides, weight gain around the middle, thickening of the blood and increased risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s and depression. These are all a result of insulin resistance and too much insulin. Elevated blood sugar is not the source of the problem.
And because insulin resistance (and diabesity) are a direct outcome of diet and lifestyle, the condition is 100 percent reversible in the vast majority of cases. Most people just need to eliminate the things that are sending their biology out of balance and include what’s needed to help the body rebalance itself. For most, the interventions required are extremely simply and extraordinarily effective.
8 Steps to Reversing Diabesity
In my new book, “The Blood Sugar Solution,” which comes out next February, I outline a comprehensive 8-week plan for overcoming diabesity in all its forms. Here is a sneak preview of the steps outlined in the book:
1. Get the right tests. Most doctors focus on fasting blood sugar. This is actually a poor indicator of diabesity. The best test to tease out the condition is an insulin response test where insulin levels are measured fasting and then 1 and 2 hours after a glucose drink. Demand this test from your doctor.
2. Get smart about nutrition. Despite the media hype and the seeming confusion amongst doctors, the basics of nutrition are extremely simple. Eliminate sugar and processed carbohydrates, include whole real foods like lean protein (chicken or fish), veggies, nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains.
3. Get the right supplements. There has recently been a frenzy of negative reports about supplements. Most of them are unfounded. Supplements are an essential part of treating diabesity. A good multivitamin, vitamin D, fish oil and special blood sugar balancing nutrients like alpha lipoic acid, chromium polynicotinate, biotin, cinnamon, green tea catechins and glucomannan should also be included.
4. Get relaxed. Stress is a major unrecognized contributor to insulin resistance and blood sugar imbalance. Push your pause button every day with deep breathing, visualization, yoga and other relaxation techniques.
5. Get moving. Aside from changing your diet, exercise is probably the single best medication for diabesity. Walk for at least 30 minutes every day. For some, 30-60 minutes of more vigorous aerobic exercise 4-6 times a week may be necessary.
6. Get clean and green. Environmental toxins also contribute to diabesity. Filter your water, look for green cleaning products and avoid plastics when you can.
7. Get personal. While the steps above will address 80 percent of the problems with diabesity, some may need to take additional steps to optimize key areas of their biology. Remember, the medicine of the future is personal medicine. Seek out your own biological imbalances and look for ways to address them.
8. Get connected. Research is beginning to show that we get better more effectively when we get together. Invite your friends, families and neighbors to change their diets and lifestyle along with you. Together we can all take back our health.
And keep your eyes peeled for “The Blood Sugar Solution,” due out next February, where I outline all of the social, economic, biological and medical underpinnings of this health epidemic and provide an 8-week, step-by-step system that will allow you to dig deep into your own biology and heal even the most severe cases of diabesity.

YOGA has wide-ranging therapeutic values, one of the most important being the management of type 2 diabetes. But how exactly does yoga prevent/cure diabetes?
Yoga helps you keep your blood sugar levels under control in three ways: by checking your weight; by relieving stress (a major trigger for escalating blood glucose levels) and by improving the functions of the pancreas (the organ that produces insulin, a glucose-regulating hormone). Even though there’s very little scientific data to prove yoga’s action on the pancreas, wisdom in the field points to it. I would recommend a few asanas that will help you control diabetes better than before.
BHUJANGASANA
Lie on your stomach with legs and toes together and pointing outward, hands by the side of the body, palms facing upward and forehead on the floor. Now bend hands from the elbows and place palms on the floor near each shoulder. Keeping your thumb under the armpit, raise the chin and turn the head backward over the right shoulder as you inhale. Raise the thorax up to the navel. Hold this position for some time while breathing normally. Come down to the starting position while exhaling. Also good for bronchitis, asthma and spondylitis. It strengthens the spine, lends flexibility to the chest, shoulders and abdomen and firms the buttocks.
DHANURASANA
Lie on your stomach and bend your knees, holding your ankles with both hands. Inhale and raise the upper body and legs. Hold for some time, breathing normally and come back to the starting position. Also good for digestion, this asana cures constipation while strengthening and improving the function of your spine.
NAUKASANA
Lie down on your back with your feet together and palms resting on your thighs. Inhale and raise both legs, lifting your upper body off the floor. Hold it for some time and breathe normally keeping your hands parallel to the floor. Now come back to the starting position slowly. Also good for nervousness and tension. Naukasana lends flexibility to your joints and bolsters the capacity of your intestines, while improving the functions of your stomach, liver and pancreas.
BHRAMARI PRANA-YAMA
Sit on the floor in a comfortable posture with a straight back, eyes closed and shoulder muscles relaxed. Inhale deeply and exhale slowly with a murmuring sound like a bee. Also good for lungs. It enhances your oxygen efficiency by reducing carbon-dioxide in the blood.
VAMANKRIYA
Add one tablespoonful of salt to one litre of lukewarm water and drink all of it, as quickly as possible, until you feel full to the point of throwing up. Lean forward and insert the middle and index fingers of your right hand deep into your throat. Vomit out the water until your stomach is empty. Relax in the shavasana pose for 10 mins. You need to do this near a wash basin. Also good for gastro-intestinal problems. It also relieves you of headaches, nervous weakness, chronic cold and asthma.
